Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2nd, 1977 in Baranquilla, Colombia. She started off writing poems which evolved into songs. Her first poem (La Rosa De Cristal) was written when she was just four. When she was given a typewriter as a birthday present, she wrote more and more poems that she was soon singing as songs. At a young age, in her father's restaurant, she heard the doumbek, a drum used mostly only for belly-dancing. That's when she realised that she loved belly-dancing, and started dancing on the tables at the restaurant, followed by tremendous applauses. It was then that Shakira realised she wanted to be a performer. Sadly, she was rejected for the school quoir because her vibrato was too strong. In 1995, she went on to record for Sony Colombia executives.
Soon she was famous in Portugese, Brazillian and more languages, and her fourth album, ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?, was released in 1998. Shakira went on to a step in English, and wrote a song called Laundy Service, and wrote English versions of the track ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?. This lead her on to writing the world-wide hit, Wherever, Whenever and Obsession (Tango). |
